FLASHBACK: The Great Northwest Road Trip 2016: Part 2

My mother fortunately had Parts 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. Parts 3 and 5 are still missing. Hmm. In the mean time, here is this chapter, thanks to Mom.

Here is a quick-y Part 2....

Before leaving Florence, Ashley wanted to see some of the sand dunes that the area is known for. So we stopped at this nearby park (Honeyman State Park), which has a lake, wooded area, and a huge sand dune.

Erich and Ashley climbed to the top of it (I'd been before---so i didn't join them).

From there we took the scenic route (Ugh! Never again!) up the coast to Newport, where, after crossing a hecka-scary skinny and high bridge, we stopped for lunch.

We spotted a place called Mo's Annex (which was right across the street from the original Mo's, but on the water). There was another Mo's in Florence, but we'd never been to it. The restaurant is known for its clam chowder, so we decided to try the place out.

Ashley had a full bowl of the chowder, I had a small cup and a shrimp sandwich. Erich, I think, had fish tacos. My sandwich was no winner and the famous chowder was nothing special (we'd all had better).

Erich skipped on the chowder, which may have been a wise thing. Not long after eating, both Ashley and I (but especially Ashley) started to feel queasy in the tummy. Ugh...

Just outside of Portland (maybe 30 minutes away), there is this incredible outlet mall Erich and I had stopped in before. We stopped for a little shopping spree. Remember, this was in Oregon...which means NO SALES TAX! Whoo hoo!

And then, after dinner at a vegetarian restaurant (with faux meat... as the taco "meat" was in my taco salad. Ha! How fun.), we made it to King City, not far from Portland, where Ashley's grandmother's house is.

The next day, it was off to Portland. First stop was Voodoo Doughnut!  There was a a long line...but we waited in it to get a chance to sample some of these legendary donuts.

The verdict? Gimmicky donuts (the "mango tango" for example was basically a jelly donut with mango filling and then Tang (the instant breakfast drink) sprinkled all over the top. Blah!) that were overly expensive, overly sweet and not very good. Oh well. We HAD to try the place out.

Following Voodoo Doughnut, we visited Powell's City of Books...which was the MOST AMAZING BOOKSTORE EVER!  It was about a full city block square (!!!) with several stories. They had more books than I've ever seen before. Amazing!

We then had lunch at a nice sushi place...that was literally just next door from Voodoo Donut.

After that, well... there was a LOT after that. Tiki bars, the Peculiarium, kava, the Shanghai Tunnels, and more...

Stay tuned for Part 3

Good night.
