FLASHBACK: The Great Northwest Road Trip 2016: Part 9

This is a continuation of July 3rd. After breakfast at the Tyee Hotel, our walk along the cliffs/lagoon/ocean and beers at the Coupeville Tap Room, we went to Langley, which is south of Coupeville on the island. Langley is more artsy and happening than Coupeville. The downtown is laid out almost exactly as Coupeville's as well (I think).

We were going there for dinner before pre-4th of July fireworks in Holmes Harbor in nearby Freeland.  However, because it gets dark so late up there (fireworks started after 10 pm), and because Langley is still a small town (where the sidewalks roll up after five o'clock more or less), there was not much choice. We found a pizza parlor but the wait to get in was crazy. Our only other option was the Langley Cafe, which served Mediterranean food (something my brother, nephew and mother were not accustomed to...and had a difficult time dealing with--especially my brother and nephew). The place closed while we were there--we being the last of their customers.

After dinner, we went back to Freeland and found ourselves a spot to watch the fireworks on the beach of Holmes Harbor. The thing that looks like a boat in the harbor is actually the platform from which they launched the fireworks.

You will also see the exciting (snore) UFO-shaped cloud formation that passed by...

Firework photos never come out very good, so I'll spare you most of them. Here's ONE:

Aside from having the fireworks start sooooo late, it was the first Fourth of July in memory that was freezing cold. I was stupidly wearing short pants...but did have a jacket. Who knew it would be windy and cold in July?

The next day we just sort of hung out. We went into oak Harbor with Mom to do some shopping, but nothing exciting. We did cruise through a Burger King drive thru for a special weird treat. Not long after the road trip began, we stopped at a Burger King so Ricki could go pee. There was a sign on the window announcing a new goody called Mac & Cheetos---which I thought was gross-sounding, yet hilarious. Ashley played like she was strangely interested in them as well and every time we'd pass a sign for them, I'd shout out Mac & Cheetos and point. Anyway, we never tried them when Ashley was about...so I took the chance to get some while in Oak Harbor. Mom, Erich and I each had one. Erich thought they were strangely good. They were weird though. They looked like giant Cheetos, but were filled with mac and cheese. They were a limited time thing and are no longer available...so here is what you missed:

The rest of the day was the build up to the 4th of July celebration at the house. Ronnie had purchased a bunch of fireworks--things that shot things into the sky or amazing fountains. My contribution was a little tank that rolled around and "fired" and the Puppy Poo firework, which, when lit, was a variation on the old "snakes" fireworks (if you know what those were). Unfortunately we had trouble with out lighters and the wind was atrocious---so we didn't do very many at all.

And that's all for now. Coming up--it's July 5th and Erich, Mom, Brawn and I head back over to Port Townsend to explore it more fully. Stay tuned.

CHEERS!
