My Coronavirus Diary Part 17

This has already seemed like the longest year ever, and it is only the last day of March. The Coronavirus continues to terrorize the world.

Yesterday, we hit the 3,000 deaths mark in this country. As I write this, there have been 3,376 deaths here (which surpasses the number of dead reported in China) and we've had 39,545 deaths globally. There are 171,556 cases here and 803,650 cases worldwide.

In Washington, there are 4,896 cases. Island County, where my family lives, now has 106 cases and they've had 3 deaths.

Locally the numbers continue to advance. California has 5,763 cases. Here in the Central Valley, yesterday there were 43 cases in my county. Today that number has jumped to 53. There are 129 cases in the Valley altogether at this moment.

I just saw a report that says that the middle-aged are as great a risk of dying from COVID 19 as the elderly are. Yikes!

My friend Janet sent me a video of a doctor, Dr. David Price, who works in New York City, which is overwhelmed with cases of COVID 19. It's a long video conference call in which he answers questions about the virus. He shares a LOT of information about how to keep you and your family safe from the virus. I would recommend checking it out if you have the time.

New York just received the 1,000 bed hospital ship sent by the US Government, but is still setting up a field hospital in Central Park as more and more cases continue to overwhelm the city. Seattle is also turning the Sea Hawks Stadium into a makeshift hospital and Philadelphia is preparing the huge arena at Temple University to house coronvirus patients if necessary.  Rhode Island is now saying they don't have enough beds for patient. Others are saying the same thing, and while other states seem to be ignoring all of this and do not have shelter in place laws in effect. Crazy!

A new model projects that California will see the peak of cases around April 25 with an estimated 100 deaths a day. That number is likely to continue until the cases slowly start to drop off in early May---if we keep sheltering in place like we have been. But even then it will be many weeks or even months until the threat is behind us. If California hadn't locked down early as it did, the number of estimated deaths could have been much higher.

My mother sent me a slightly different projection, but I am unclear as to what it's projection (with a peak on April 15th) is showing. Wait--my mother just clarified. If you click the link, there is a green line with an arrow on it. Click the arrow to scroll down to see your state. The chart is showing the entire country. April 15th seems to be the peak for the country as a whole, with April 27 being the peak date for California. The projected amount of dead is 83,000+.  Jeepers!

An assemblyman in my area sent out an email, alerting people to various types of scams going on. The note is below:
Remember, the IRS would never contact you about your personal information (Hello? They should already know your social security number.) Utility companies are NOT shutting them off during this emergency---so if you get calls saying they are, know it is a scam. There are no vaccines as of yet. All of those calls would be bogus. Hang up and do not fall victim to them.

This blog is a diary of sorts. Yes, I talk about what is going on with the virus, repeating news and mentioning the escalating number of cases, etc. But it is also a personal diary, where I mention what is going on with me (and my friends when they check in). I hadn't wanted to say anything, but...

I've had problems with my legs for years. I've been to neurologists (three), a venous specialist, my general practitioner and have even ventured to the Mayo Clinic in pursuit of a diagnosis (and hopeful treatment) for my problems, which have now spread to my arms as well. I'll spare you the boring details (or, if you really need to annoy yourself, you can read the long, drawn-out, fruitless saga starting HERE). My only hope at this point seems to be with a surgeon I have a consultation with later today (now scheduled via telephone, thanks to the virus outbreak) about a possible muscle biopsy that may show whatever my problem is. This appointment was scheduled weeks ago.

Last Friday, I went to work as usual. By the time I walked in the door at home after my long 12-hour day, I could hardly walk at all. I was incredibly exhausted and I just went to bed.

I couldn't sleep. My legs were hurting so badly.

I called in to work on Saturday. By Saturday night I was still having trouble and knew I couldn't survive my shift the next day, so I called in for Sunday.

On Monday, my doctor put me on a medical leave for 6 weeks. My big hope is that the surgeon can do the biopsy, discover what is wrong with me and provide me some sort of therapeutic regime to get my arms and legs working again during that time. However, with all that is going on, I doubt that will happen.

So now, here we are in this horrible crisis with the virus. The world is shut down and I am becoming crippled. I am worried about losing my job (and medical insurance), as well as eventually losing my ability to walk altogether or use my arms (and the pain associated with this process)--on top of worrying about getting COVID 19. Ain't life dandy?

Are their any billionaires out there who want to finance research to discover my problem? You'd probably get to name the disease or syndrome after yourself. Just sayin'... 😉

This is a bit old now, but I thought it was too good to skip over entirely. Actor Jim Carrey riffed JAWS and made this political cartoon about President Trump, when the president was going on about re-opening businesses and trying to save the economy. Classic.

Stay Safe. Stay Sheltered. Sta ALIVE!

Wash your hands!

CHEERS!

Shawn, I'm so sorry to hear about what's happening with your legs and now arms. I just hope the surgeon you have a call with today will give you some hope. Thanks for writing these posts and hang in there!!

Hi there. The call was good and very hopeful. The surgeon is also an endocrinologist and she works closely with a rheumatologist---both of which I have been unable to see thus far. I HOPE they can find something and direct me in a path towards wellness. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!
