My Coronavirus Diary #77

There are 3,304,942 cases of the coronavirus here in the United States. There have been 135,205 deaths.

More than 70,000 people tested positive for the virus on Friday---just here in the USA. A report says 1 in every 150 Americans is infected. Don't believe the talk about the death rate going down. As more and more cases occur, the hospitals are filling up and the death rate is beginning to take off again. And the rift between the president and health experts continues to grow. The Trump Administration is now actively trying to discredit Dr. Anthony Fauci.

VIRUS NEWS:

Things are getting so bad now, health experts are saying that these 6 states should close down again.

Florida had a record-shattering 15,299 new COVID 19 confirmed cases yesterday.

Despite the president wanting to reopen schools in the fall, internal documents in the CDC say reopening classrooms is the "highest risk" for spreading the virus. New Jersey is already questioning the wisdom of opening in the fall. Kids may have to learn to give themselves tests for the coronavirus before going back to school. One pediatrician chimed in with a truthful look at reopening schools.

A school district in Virginia is preparing to re-open in the fall, but the superintendent has a message for Betsy DeVos.

Teachers are feeling frustration, fear and anxiety about the possible return to the classroom.

Three summer school teachers, utilizing the same classroom but also following safety guidelines, got infected with the virus. One of them died.

At the college level, university professors are worried about returning to classes in the fall.

President Trump visited the Walter Reed Military Hospital...and wore a mask.  Of course, he eventually cheated and had his nose above the mask.

At least presidential nominee, Joe Biden knows how to wear a mask correctly.

The first lady, Melania Trump, posted a video of her wearing a mask.

The Surgeon General, Jerome Adams, added his thoughts on making masks mandatory...at the state level.

A second patient has received a lung transplant after a fierce battle with COVID 19.

Autopsies of COVID 19 patients have revealed blood clots in almost every major organ.

There is now more evidence suggesting that a TB vaccine may help in the fight against COVID 19.

Moderno and Inovio are in a heated race to get a vaccine ready...both show promising resilts.

Bill Gates warned about any vaccine going to the highest bidder would cause an even deadlier pandemic.

A man in Florida and his sons were charged in selling a toxic chemical as a coronavirus cure.

An emergency room doctor in Arizona dispels the president's claim that the majority of cases "automatically get better."

A group of doctors and nurses recently returned from assisting in helping members of the Navajo Nation during the pandemic. Reports of the conditions these people live in were shocking.

Just when you thought 2020 couldn't get worse, there is a report from China about an "unknown pneumonia" outbreak in Kazakhstan that is even more deadly than COVID 19. Kazakhstan is denying this.

There is a mutation of the coronavirus spreading across the globe.

Trump's planned rally in New Hampshire last Saturday was canceled. It was not out of concern for the virus, but blamed on bad weather. While New Hampshire was sunny and clear on Saturday, rumor has it that his campaign canceled it out of concern for low turnout.  Instead of holding a rally (or doing something about the pandemic, the unemployment, the deficit, or anything else), he went golfing over the weekend---for his 275th game of his presidency. (He defended his frequent golfing as "exercise". Although he claims to have golfed far less than President Obama, that claim is not true. At this same stage of his presidency, Obama had golfed only 98 games.)

With virus numbers skyrocketing in Florida, it is looking more and more like the president will not get the National Republican Convention in the state as he was hoping to.

A lake in Michigan was the scene of a massive 4th of July party. Now, predictably, some of the people who attended have caught the coronavirus.

Donald Trump Jr's girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, was diagnosed as coronavirus positive on July 3 just a short time before the president's early 4th of July celebration at Mt. Rushmore. Her diagnosis has sent a wave of panic through residents of the Hamptons, as Trump Jr and Guilfoyle attended a maskless party there just days earlier.

A 37-year-old year old man from Ohio who slammed the "hype" about the virus on Facebook, has died from it.

An Arizona resident, who lost her father to the virus, blamed the "carelessness of politicians" for his death in his obituary
A poll says 2/3 of Americans disapprove of the president's handling of the virus situation.

Cell phone data shows that Americans hit the road over the 4th of July weekend. Geez!

Disney World re-opened despite Florida's insanely high rate of infection.

Despite the virus, young adults (many of which are silent spreading the virus) are upbeat about global travel  options right now.

Three people tested positive for the virus after a flight from Albany to Atlanta.

A report details how food suppliers are being pressured during the pandemic.

A regular customer at a restaurant that has been struggling through the pandemic left the employees a $1,000 tip.

While New York's virus statistics have stayed low, Governor Cuomo expressed concern with the current trend he is seeing in the rest of the US and how it might trickle back into his state.

New Jersey saw 438 new cases on Saturday and 49 more deaths.

South Carolina lost its first child under five to the virus. It also had its first case of the inflammatory syndrome seen in children with the virus. The University of South Carolina has officially canceled in-person graduations.

Things are bad in Florida. Many local leaders there want to step up protective measures. However, Governor DeSantis is being a stubborn. New York sent help...which the governor totally downplayed and flat-out denied. Instead of thanking Governor Cuomo (who he didn't mention at all), he praised Vice President Mike Pence.

Pennsylvania had more than 1,000 cases on Saturday. The state, which had previously called for visitors from 15 states (including California, Texas and Florida) to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival, has added an additional 4 states to the list.

An outbreak in Kentucky has been tied to a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

More lawmakers are being diagnosed (there are now dozens) in Mississippi after refusing to wear masks.

Michigan had 390 new cases of the virus on Sunday bringing the state total above 70,000. A Walmart in the state has been closed due to a coronavirus exposure. Contract tracers in the state are meeting with lies, hostility and silence in their attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

There were 1,460 new cases in Tennessee on Saturday.

A patient in their 30s died of the virus after attending a "COVID party" in Texas. The state has had more than 10,000 hospitalizations a day for three days in a row. It is getting so bad in Texas that, just as we saw in New York, refrigerated trucks are being called in to act as temporary morgues. San Antonio County added 535 new cases on Sunday. Dallas County alone had 1,174 cases yesterday, marking the 10th day in a row of new cases crossing the 1,000 mark. The governor of the state is flailing about during this crisis.

Outside of the United States and Brazil, the UK is the next hardest hit country dealing with the virus...and the people there are not wanting to be wearing masks.

A bus driver in France was beaten and later died after he refused to let a rider on without a mask, as was the policy.

An outbreak of the virus at two US Marine bases in Okinawa have officials in Japan understandably upset with the US.

Indonesia is failing in its attempts to control the virus' spread.

Discrimination and tensions in Italy have cropped up over people who want to book vacations from areas that were previously hot spots within the country.

As COVID 19 cases increase, South Africa has banned the sale of alcohol.

CALIFORNIA:

Cases are surging and the state is "ramping up" hospital capacity.

Despite that crazy number of cases in Orange County, Downtown Disney's reopening drew crowds. The county reported 814 new cases on Sunday alone.

A 32-year-old man from Inglewood survived the virus after 93 days in the hospital.

The state plans to release 8,000 inmates from its prison system as a means to keep infection rates down in the prisons.

Stockton is giving its residents $500 a month to help cope with dire financial hardships caused by the pandemic.

Alameda County was added to the state's watch list after a marked increase in the number of cases there. The governor ordered the shut down restaurants ...including outdoor dining.

Bay Area churches are having to face changes due to the rise in virus cases.

LOCAL:

A COVID 19 pop-up testing site in Fresno drew hundreds of people.

If you have symptoms, you are asked to isolate immediately.

Kern County reported 163 new cases yesterday.

After hundreds of prisoners tested positively for the virus at the Fresno County Jail, families are protesting or seeking legal help to get the prisoners health care.

House of JuJu and Luna's, both in Old Town Clovis, were cited for allowing indoor dining.

CREATIVITY:

This is not virus related, but it is creative...and funny/clever.

MAIL:

Linda, in Castro Valley, sent me a super quick note:

" I got a free Coronavirus test 6/30 at San Leandro Community Center," she said. "They said I should hear in 3-5 working days. Results came back  7/7. Negative, luckily."

Mauro in Italy sent a note:

"I listen about COVID 19 in USA in TV, of course, and around the world, too," he said. "Here in Europe now, it's almost under control. Borders are open and summer season runs almost normally. We finished our June vacation and we're ready to make next in August. I hope we can go to Croatia, but it's difficult because we need documents/booking/health certificate/ etc.

"My family stay fine, all normal. Work runs like before the pandemic time.

"We're waiting next autumn. Doctors are scary about the return of COVID 19."

My friend Kim, the CNA in Wisconsin, sent a note:

"It is crazy here," she said. "People are just not listening and now things are getting out of control. I am negative, so far.  I get tested again Tuesday and then every two weeks. The hospital I work at is okay so far. I am not going out to eat or doing anything that will put me at risk.  I did once and just felt like I should not of done it. Thank God I am still negative!.  I think the best thing to do is close things down again.  I know it is now a big mess.  It should of been taken seriously way back when they started to get the warnings about it.

"My family and friends are all well. Hopefully it can stay that way. I just got done working 10 days in a row. I want to keep well rested and not stressed.  I do not want to weaken my immune system and get sick.  I have tomorrow off and am planning on relaxing. I have a feeling it is going to get tougher.  It's almost impossible to avoid it.  Praying for a vaccine soon. I am sure that Hawaii will not be happening for me in March."

SHIRLEY:

Shirley has been avoiding the heat. On Friday, the day after I found her trapped in a sideways position behind the garbage can, she looked wiped out when I found her in the morning. Her arms and legs were just sprawled out, as was her head. I just let her stay inside and sleep all day long.

On Saturday, she was still asleep when I got up. But I picked her up and put her by the sliding glass doors to go outside---if she chose to. It took her a while to wake up and decide, but she ended up walking outside. I only left her out an hour and a half or so as it was just so HOT. It has been over 100 for days. I put her down by the door and she walked over to her cardboard condo and went to sleep.

On Sunday, she was antsy. She woke up around noon and walked across the kitchen to the other side of the refrigerator again. I left her there, thinking she just wanted to sleep there. It was 108 yesterday, so I was not going to see if she wanted to go out. I went to work on the blog and, a little while later, I heard her banging around. She was trying to crawl under a bar stool. Okay...

Later still, she was banging around again---trying to turn around and get out from under the bar stool. I moved the stool and she started walking towards the sliding glass door. She wanted out. In the heat? Okay...

I let her out, but brought her in again about the time she usually comes in. She wouldn't eat outside. I offered her food several times. When she came in, she went back to the cardboard condo and went to bed. I moved her food near the box and she later decided to eat. She is sleeping now...

She did let me pet her a bit when she first came back in. She likes her neck rubbed.

ME:

Yawn... There is nothing to say, really. My biggest accomplishment over the weekend was shaving and taking a shower Sunday evening. I've been going through boxes, trying to get rid of crap...and it has created an even bigger mess than usual. Ha!

Stay SAFE!  Stay SHELTERED! Stay ALIVE!
