My Coronavirus Diary #81

We now have an mind-blowing 4,234,020 confirmed cases of the virus right here in the USA. We have had 146,935 deaths. The horror of it all does not seem to be coming to an end any time soon.
Hospitals are so overwhelmed in south Texas that some hospitals are sending some patients home to die. Florida has surpassed New York in the total number of cases and one infected Floridian has been dying approximately every 10 minutes. For the last five consecutive days, our country has seen 1,000 or more deaths a day. Things are bad, bad, BAD!

VIRUS NEWS:

The CDC has reported that 1/3 of COVID 19 patients who are not hospitalized have long-term complications. This is also true in young adults.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has been receiving hate mail and his family has been getting death threats by warped individuals who blame him for the pandemic.

Television stations owned by Sinclair Television Group plan to air the discredited and debunked documentary PLANDEMIC which, among other things, paints Dr. Fauci as a researcher who created the virus.

A doctor describes the awful situation in south Texas and how he tried, unsuccessfully, to resuscitate a woman in the parking lot.

A Texas man died after his granddaughter attended a party, unknowingly caught the virus and passed it on to him.

A 20-year-old woman visiting Hawaii, who was supposed to be quarantining, was arrested for ignoring isolation rules.

After a big family barbecue, 14 members of a Texas family have contracted the virus.

A Bible conference that was held against state orders was the origin of an outbreak in Colorado.

A senator for Arkansas, who was anti-mask and believed the outbreak a hoax that was no worse than the flu, contracted the virus and has been hospitalized.

A nurse in Florida, who ended up paralyzed after a bout with COVID 19, has been flown to Boston for treatment.

White House adviser Stephen Miller's grandmother died of COVID 19 complications. Her son (Miller's uncle) blames the Trump administration. Miller and the White House deny the cause of death.

In a bit of brilliant analysis, one reporter likens not wearing a mask being akin to not wearing a condom during the AIDS crisis and getting the virus, as he did.

MIT researchers have created a reusable N95-like mask.

A couple in Minnesota went to WalMart wearing masks...with swastikas on them.

McDonald's will start requiring face mask usage for all customers across the country starting August 1st.

Face masks are now required in "common spaces" in Washington state.

This report again points out that, yes, kids can get the virus, pass it on to others, and also die from it.

A children's shelter in Texas had an outbreak, with 4 staff and 11 children testing positive.

The 9-year-old who died in Florida from the virus had no known underlying health issues.

According to Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, teachers in the state "are itching to get back" to the classroom. (Uh, hello? Last time I checked, they were suing him to stay out of them.) He later backed down on his insistence that schools open...and has made it parents choice.

The top Republicans in Florida have proven wishy-washy on the school reopenings in regards to their own children.

A school employee in Viriginia has tested positive for the virus.

School districts in Washington have backed off plans for in-person learning this year.

A 5th grade teacher in Colorado shows the reality of what classrooms will look like when school resumes in the clip below. There is no way this can work successfully.

There is no way the schools in Los Angeles can open says the district superintendent.

The article tries to analyze the president's mind-bending logic on school reopenings.

It's interesting that the president still feels the need to send kids back to school when his own son's school will not be reopening and the Republican convention in Florida has been canceled due to the outbreak...

Although foreign students who are already here may stay and take online classes, no new students will be allowed into the country for the fall semester.

A teen house party in New Jersey led to an outbreak in the state with at least 20 teens testing positive.

The Supreme Court decided against a church in Nevada that was suing over attendance limitations during the pandemic.

Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin says that GOP senators are ready to go on another relief bill. There is supposed to be another $1,200 check for citizens in the deal.

Senator Ted Cruz claims that Democrats are shutting down every school and business in an effort to beat Trump. Hello? Has he NOT heard of the deadly pandemic? Idiot.

Dr. Fauci does not believe a vaccine will be available until several months into 2021.

As pharmaceutical companies around the world race to come up with a vaccine, several problems have been hampering the efforts of researchers.

Moderna is expected to begin phase three of the clinical trials for its experimental vaccine this coming week. The company was given another $472 million by the US government to further testing.

Experts are saying that if/when a vaccine is created, booster shots will probably be required.

China is offering Latin America and the Caribbean a $1 billion loan for access to the vaccination it is developing...ensuring those already poor countries stay impoverished longer.

If none of the experimental vaccines proves to be effective, is there a Plan B?

A report says that an experimental treatment of an inhaled form of protein has proven to be effective.

Turnaround time for testing and getting results is still taking way too long. Many testing centers are overwhelmed.

As testing supplies dwindle in areas and results sometimes take weeks, alternative ways of testing are being looked at.

As the summer heats up, experts fear the worse for COVID 19 cases.

A pro-Trump activist held up a flight by refusing to wear a mask.

A flight attendant in training died from the virus while 16 others in training with him have also become infected.

What are your chances of catching COVID 19 on a flight? This article may answer your question.

Universal Studios has canceled Halloween Horror Nights at both locations for this year.

Although cruise ships are not running now, fans of cruising can't wait to set sail once again.

Nearly 16,000 restaurants that have been closed due to COVID 19 are closed permanently.

The CDC has updated quarantine guidelines for those who test positive.

Why do some COVID 19 patients lose their sense of smell? Scientists now think they know why.

A nurse in Texas who is caring for coronavirus patients, had to put her planned wedding on hold. Co-workers surprised her with a wedding at the hospital.

A couple, married 46 years, has overcome cancer, chemo and COVID 19 together.

Support for the president's handling of the pandemic has reached a new low. A political analyst pointed out that the president only seemed to start caring about the pandemic when he realized it was hurting/killing off his base. With nearly 150,000 dead, more than 4 million cases and a hurricane ready to hit Texas with another heading to Hawaii, how did our fearless leader spend his Saturday? Golfing---for the 266th time of his presidency (which has cost tax payers an estimated $137 million dollars). But then, he later said he was unable to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium in August. He said he was "too busy" with the virus situation. Right...

The actor Leslie Jordan has apparently been keeping a video diary of his time in quarantine. Here is a fairly recent entry:

These YouTubers did an amazing thing. They got every dog in one shelter adopted out. (They weren't exactly careful with their masks, but...)

What is like when Coronavirus ("Call me 'Rona") shows up at the beach on your vacation?

MAIL:

My friend Ricki in Oregon sent me a gift. She sent a T-Shirt featuring Varla Jean Merman doing the splits with the caption "Superspreader" below it. Tastefully tacky & timely. Ha! THANK YOU, Ricki!

SHIRLEY:

Shirley continues to be her same silly self. She hasn't wanted out--but she has been restless, crawling in and out of her box through the hole she created in it.

Throughout the last several days, she has been inside, then come outside again to lay on the tile, then partially back in her box.

I don't quite know what she was going for here, having her head wedged into the corner of the box...but whatever. Maybe she is doing a tortoise version of "The Hokey Pokey"?

The bulk of the weekend, she pushed her box aside and just laid on the tile. She likes to be in tight corners.

Saturday was the LIFE IN A DAY filming day. If either of us makes it in to the finished film, it will be Shirley, going outside on her own and coming back in. She was the star of the day (and I'll have footage from that next time for you). She's never going to forgive me though. I discovered, too late, that she had peas smeared all over her face after she ate. Oops.

ME:

Last Saturday, as I've said, was the LIFE IN A DAY filming day...and I had NOTHING to do. I was going to go to the drive in, but there was some drive in concert going on I didn't want to see. I thought about taking a little day trip...and I've found some day trip places I can go to and not see anyone...and I hope to do those in the coming weeks. But on the actual filming day--I really had NOTHING happening.

I did have a bit of a situation. In trying to re-create my 15 nanoseconds of fame from the original movie, I tried to get a shot of myself sitting on the toilet. Mind you, my whole day was "faked" in a sense. I live alone. So, I'd have to walk to one part of a room, set the camera up and turn it on, then walk back and do whatever action I was planning on doing. To re-create the toilet shot used in the film (in case they want to go with a call back from the first film...or just need someone on the toilet again) took me about 45 minutes of trying. I had a table in the bathroom with me and several cardboard boxes. Trying to get the right angle (or film in the correct direction---how many times do you think I accidentally filmed the wall?) took forever. I was wiggling back and forth on the toilet seat, trying to adjust the table, boxes or camera position...and my position...and I ended up breaking the little plastic connector piece that holds the seat in place! Ha! You can hear it on video--but can't see it (I was adjusting the camera yet again when it happened).

Darn it all... I can't find that clip. I remember playing it back and hearing the sound of the break, the seat shifting and then my laughing about it...but I must have deleted it right then and there as I can not find it. Argh.

O well. I'll share my footage of the day later.

Did you participate?

Stay SAFE. Stay SHELTERED. Stay ALIVE.

Hi there, Shawn. Love the post. The numbers are terrible, of course. Love the video of Canada. They're are doing so much better than we are. And, of course, Justin Trudeau is hot! Ha. Looking forward to the video. I'm doing fine, still busy with different projects, staying home for the most part. Yesterday, I had a friend over for dinner. We sat on the balcony six feet apart. It was fun though.
Stay safe my dear friend!

Christa,

Thank you for your visit on the blog. Yes, Canada is doing so much better than we are. As is Europe, Australia, New Zealand, etc. In regards to the virus, we are more akin to a "third world country" that the "world leader" we are supposed to be. Thank you, President Trump and the Republican party for doing NOTHING. (Grr... Don't get me started.) I am glad you were safely able to have a friend visit.

CHEERS!
