My Coronavirus Diary #98

There are now 7,979,885 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the USA. There have been 217,700 deaths from the virus here as well. The CDC now projects up to 240,000 US COVID 19 deaths by November 7. Have no fear. Donald Trump is willing to donate his plasma to save you. Really. (UGH...)

VIRUS NEWS:

'Hunker down': The fall Covid-19 surge is here.

Why won’t the White House say when Trump last tested negative before testing positive two weeks ago? Here is why it matters...

The president had still not shown a current negative test since his infection, despite saying he is going to resume "really big" rallies. His first new negative was shown October 12.

Trump says he is 'medication-free' and described his COVID battle.

Following his illness, Trump resumed his public events with a mini-rally on the White House lawn (many of which were paid to be there.) He is now ready to take his COVID misinformation show on the road... In fact, Trump wants to hit campaign trail every day through election.

Trump claims he’s ‘immune’ to COVID 19 as he aims for a barrage of rallies in swing states. Claiming immunity, he said he felt like going into the audience and kissing all of the men and the beautiful women (which has to be seen/heard to be believed.)
Trump claims to have the “protective glow” of immunity from COVID-19 on Fox News and the tries to stir up a bogus new Biden health issue.

A Right-wing conspiracy theorist has been online spouting that Trump was infected by a ‘weaponized drone’ that sprayed COVID in the Rose Garden in an assassination attempt.

The CEO of Regeneron, the company that created the antibody cocktail that helped the president when he was first diagnosed with the coronavirus, poured cold water on Trump's claim that the therapy made him immune to COVID 19.

Confused Eric Trump says that his dad is getting cured by his own ‘vaccine.’

Twitter censored a tweet from the president in which he claimed to be immune from the virus.

Trump held a rally for about 2,000 "fans" (many of whom were paid to be there) at the White House last Saturday at an event that some critics have dubbed “Covchella.” In addition to the president, his medical advisor, Dr. Scott Atlas, was not wearing a mask.
A passenger on Joe Biden’s plane has tested positive for the coronavirus.

An Illinois Republican congressman announced he tested positive for coronavirus.
White House Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows, was asked by reporters to wear a mask. He put one on...and then stormed off.

COVID 19 positive Senator tweeted excuses for not wearing a mask (or self-isolating!) for the Senate SCOUTUS confirmation hearings.

With infected members or suspected infected members unwilling to take tests, the GOP is seemingly literally willing to kill to get their SCOTUS nominee confirmed.

According to a new report, a Trump appointee pressured the CDC to alter a report on COVID-19 risks in children during the White House's push to re-open schools.

A public health champion has asked the CDC director to expose the White House for its COVID 19 failures.

Dr. Fauci says the U.S. is 'facing a whole lot of trouble' with coronavirus cases as the temperatures drop. But he also says we should be seeing a return to some degree of normalcy in late 2021.

The White House cites bogus herd-immunity petition signed by fake experts including ‘Dr. Johnny Bananas’ as their plan of course.

Fauci calls 'herd immunity' declaration embraced by White House 'ridiculous'

This argument is happening in the UK (and should happen here): Lockdown or a drip feed of COVID restrictions? One path is better for the economy. (Guess which.)

The scientific consensus on the COVID-19 pandemic is that we need to act now.
The White House has pivoted on a new coronavirus stimulus so many times they’re turning in circles. The latest news is that the president is considering a larger package than ever before.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says a new coronavirus stimulus package is "unlikely" before the election, despite Trump's desperation for one to boost his re-election bid. On Thursday, he shot down a $1.8 trillion deal, breaking with Trump. This comes just two days after CNN's Wolf Blitzer grilled Nancy Pelosi about a stimulus package even though the problem was clearly not her doing.

According to an article in Newsweek, only 1/3 of Americans think the election will be free and fair.

The next debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is canceled after the president declined to do a virtual debate despite concerns over his COVID-19 diagnosis. Joe Biden's campaign has called out the decision by President Trump to forgo the second presidential debate. "It's shameful that Donald Trump ducked the only debate in which the voters get to ask the questions — but it's no surprise," a spokesperson said. (Rumor on Twitter has it that Trump is nervous because, just like at the RNC, he has no platform to run on.)

In lieu of a debate, Biden held a town hall. Trump also held one on NBC (that was awkward, but he did share some of his COVID experience--and he would not denounce QANON), for which the network received a lot of flack. Beforehand, Trump went off on the selected moderator---even though he is getting a free hour of TV.

President Trump baselessly claimed during the town hall that Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House's Coronavirus Task Force, was a Democrat when in fact he is not registered with any political party.

Here are some take-aways from the town hall.

The town halls were fact checked. Find out who was truthful and who wasn't.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said he will demand President Trump take a COVID-19 test, and for that test to return negative, before he will participate in the next debate.

Devin Nunes refuses to debate his opponent Phil Arballo (Who I am voting for) in a very tight race.

The second debate between incumbent South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and his challenger, Jaime Harrison, was canceled late Friday afternoon after Graham refused to take a COVID19 test beforehand. (However, he lied and said that Harrison skipped out.) (The word on Twitter is that Graham is afraid to debate Harrison again after getting the pants beat off of him last time...and that Graham is actually positive for the virus, but afraid to admit it due to the upcoming hearings for the proposed new Supreme Court justice.)
Democrats have introduce a bill to create a commission that would evaluate Trump’s fitness for office...and possibly evoke Article 25 of the Constitution. (Finally!)

Former operatives for John McCain and George W. Bush who are Republicans are calling on Americans to vote for a Democrat in the presidential election.

During a rally-like interview on Rush Limbaugh, Trump was asked a question from a listener about health care and pre-existing conditions. He floundered answering it and with off on a different subject altogether.

The Supreme Court has cleared Montana election officials to send mail-in ballots to the vast majority of the state's voters, rejecting a last-ditch Republican bid to block the plan.
The GOP is in trouble in deep red Trump country, as candidates struggle to reclaim House seats.

Mitch McConnell openly laughed when his challenger, Amy McGrath, brought up the fact that he had been sitting on coronavirus relief for months.

It may be bye-bye time to Mitch McConnell, as democrats are predicted to win back the Senate. (I soooo HOPE this happens.)
Who is backing whom? Here is a look at those supporting Biden and those supporting Trump.

More than 200 retired generals and admirals endorse Biden for president.

More than 1,600 leaders of faith have endorsed the Joe Biden, a marked change from 2016 when 80% of white evangelicals backed Trump. The president has also had a slight decline in support from white Christians.

Biden has won endorsements from nearly 200 U.S. law enforcement officials.

More than 125 mayors across Pennsylvania announce they're backing Biden for president.

Teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg has endorsed Joe Biden.

President Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani's daughter is voting for Biden.

The Villages, the nation’s largest retirement community located in Florida, is leaning towards Biden by a large margin. Vice President Mike Pence was there Saturday to speak to seniors when a plane flew overhead with a banner that read: ‘Pence is why you can’t see your grandkids.’
Republican John McCain's widow hopes to send the president packing with a new video in whish she endorses Joe Biden.

Trump's alma mater, Wharton School, says Biden's plan would lead to more economic growth.

A GOP-appointed judge says she will not be voting for Trump.

Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker has released a statement declaring that he will not be supporting President Trump for re-election.

In Dearborn, Michigan, Muslim Americans are mobilizing to defeat Trump.

35 psychiatrists just met at Yale University to warn that Donald Trump has a 'dangerous mental illness.'

The Palm Beach Post, the newspaper for the town that is home to Trump's Mar-A-Lago resort, endorses Biden.

Joe Biden's new Facebook ad lists all of the Republicans supporting him over Trump.

Trump won an endorsement from the terrorist organization, the Taliban (this is in addition to Osama Bin Laden's niece and the KKK. REALLY!)
Trump, who had previously agreed to the debate schedule and the moderators selected, backed out of debate No.2 because it was to be virtual as a safety precaution (because, hello? He is contagious). He now wants a Fox News anchor to be a moderator (seemingly forgetting that Fox's Chris Wallace was the moderator of the first debate). A CNN anchor deftly explains why this is not a fair idea at all.

The day before President Donald Trump announced Amy Coney Barrett as his U.S. Supreme Court pick, U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith said Republican senators would come with “guns loaded” and “packed” to ensure the president’s nominee is confirmed. Let's vote these violence-promoting crazies out!

As the Amy Coney Barrett hearings continue, Barrett has had trouble reciting the five freedoms of Article 1 of the Constitution, could not say whether Trump has the power to delay the election (he does not), she refuses to state her stance on climate change, same-sex marriage, or Roe V Wade, and did not recuse herself from voting against the Affordable Care Act. She only has three years experience as a judge and, as a SCOTUS, she is supposed to be a virtual Constitutional scholar. Hello? What is wrong with this picture? And hear her say, “I’m very happy to say that I think racial discrimination still exists in the United States.”

Trump had an epic meltdown after Democrats destroyed his healthcare record during SCOTUS hearings.

88 of Amy Coney Barrett’s faculty colleagues at Notre Dame have released a letter saying she should withdraw from consideration for the Supreme Court. Nearly 8,000 members of her sorority have signed a letter in protest of her nomination.
Senator Lindsey Graham was apparently trying to make a joke when addressing Barrett in the confirmation hearings about "the good old days of segregation."  South Carolina Senate candidate Jaime Harrison deservedly ripped into Lindsey Graham over the comments.

Graham also brought up Harrison's campaign contribution donations against him in the Barrett hearings.

Despite protests from Democrats, they are powerless to stop the confirmation of Barrett as a new Supreme Court justice.

While Republicans accuse Biden of a court-packing stance he hasn't taken, they've corruptly engineered a conservative judiciary.

With the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare) in the balance, it is interesting to note that the average American spends 15 times more on health care than Trump paid in federal income taxes in 2017.

Desperate to keep them hidden (even though the New York Times already leaked them), Trump filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court to block his takes from the Grand Jury.

Democrat Senator Sheldon Whitehouse laughed at Ted Cruz’s attempt to dismiss his exposé of shadowy right-wing judicial groups.

Biden says he's 'Not a fan' of expanding the Supreme Court.
Despite what the Trump campaign keeps insisting, Biden does NOT plan any new taxes for people who make under $400,000 a year.

Another historian  remarked that Trump can no longer rely on his ‘side shows’ to win votes – but what else does he have?

Why do Republicans still work for Trump, especially when the White House is a COVID hotspot?
Trump's "October surprise" seems to be the magical appearance, courtesy of Rudy Giuliani, of Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden's emails. The emails have not been authenticated. In fact, the whole story is widely regarded as disinformation (Facebook and Twitter have limited access to it) ...And Hunter Biden is not running for president. His father is. So the point is?? The Biden campaign lashed out at the tabloid (which is owned by News Corp, a company owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox News. Obviously.). An excellent article in Newsweek details the flimsy way the emails (and other materials) were obtained and shared. It all sounds like a very detailed and elaborate hoax created to put the Bidens in a bad light.

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right of free speech, which is often mistaken for the right to say anything without repercussions. The White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah either doesn’t know this or is willingly misleading her social media following by saying that the Twitter and Facebook "censorship we are witnessing is the kind of thing you see from rogue regimes and totalitarian states." No... They are private companies and she (and the president and others) are actively lying on them, spreading disinformation/misinformation, which is against the policies of the social media outlets.

The Trump team has been humiliated at the failure of their cooked up "October surprise."

A new report suggests his tax records show 200 entities funneled money to Trump properties while reaping benefits from White House, which is totally illegal. Just add that to his growing list of woes that he will be facing once he is out of the White House.

Scrambling to score votes, Trump is now claiming that Obama and Biden really did not assassinate Osama Bin Laden. He claims it was all faked and the six Navy SEALs that carried out the job were executed. This has been called out as a lie by the Navy SEAL who actually shot Bin Laden.

An appeals court dismissed the Texas GOP's lawsuit over drive-thru voting in Harris County.

CREATIVITY:

Just in time for the Halloween season, here is a short, 17-minute scary movie set in and made in quarantine featuring genre stars Dee (E.T., CUJO) Wallace, Scout (HALLOWEEN 2007 remake) Compton, Barbara (RE-ANIMATOR) Crampton, Danielle (HALLOWEEN 4/5) Harris and Kane (FRIDAY THE 13TH: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN) Hodder playing themselves.

Speaking of horror, a new fan-film sequel to the FRIDAY THE 13TH series debuted online this week.

THE BRADY BUNCH is b-a-c-k in the age of COVID 19. With the help of the son and daughter of series creator Sherwood Schwartz, original Bradys Barry ("Greg") Williams and Christopher ("Peter") Knight and a cast of Broadway performers, a Maine theater company will present a benefit reading of the all-new "A VERY BRADY MUSICAL."

This is brilliant. It compares President Obama and President Trump discussing the assassination of two different terrorists. One looks and sounds very presidential. The other sounds like a complete idiot and buffoon. Trust me--this is funny. https://twitter.com/i/status/1314964163949744130

MAIL:

I had a note from my CNA friend, Kim in Wisconsin:

"COVID is so bad here!," she said. "All of the major hospitals in the area are full or close to it. My hospital is full and all the other hospitals want to send us patients. As you said in your blog, we have set up a field hospital in Milwaukee where my aunt lives. I am getting so many hours that I am getting leg cramps. I knew this day was coming. So far, I am staying healthy. I get checked twice a week now. My family is healthy so far and so are my friends. I am just concerned that if I keep wearing myself out, I may get sick. I have a feeling it is going to be a long winter. I do have the weekend off. I plan on watching scary movies and just relax, I suppose."

I had an email from my friend Mikey in Iowa:

"Things are still about the same here," he said. "The COVID cases are going up about 10+ per day. One of the employees at the local soft serve shop just tested positive and none of them ever wore masks.  I'm glad we stopped going there last month.

"Nobody here wears masks, except for the employees at Walmart. I went to the court house yesterday to drop off our ballots and they required masks for anyone entering the building, but none of the employees there were wearing masks. Weird. I guess they are only required during the few seconds it takes to enter the building.  LOL!  At least we voted. Now to play the waiting game to see if we get the COVID.

"We just purchased a nice, used Suburban from a local used car dealer. I didn't drive it for about a month, until I decided to take it in for a transmission service. (New filter, fluid, and pan gasket). Bad news. The mechanic told me the transmission was on it's last leg and if I 'baby' it,  it might last for a couple of years. I was soooo sad. The car wasn't cheap and we finally got something that seemed nice -- and now this.

"I sent a short note to the dealership telling them of my woes. I hadn't heard back from them. I really didn't expect to, as it was an 'as-is' sale. Then,  just now, the phone rang, but I was busy so I let it go to voicemail. I Googled the number and it is the car dealership.  Now,  I'm kind of apprehensive about calling them. They left a message, but I haven't even listened to it yet.  I hate these things. I always get caught off guard when I'm on the phone and prefer to communicate via email when talking to someone about business. I know it sounds a bit silly. I should just listen to the message and then call them. Who knows, maybe they will offer to have it fixed? The estimate was for between $3500 and $5000 to have it rebuilt. I was kind of thinking that maybe I could find a used transmission and swap it out myself in the driveway, but I'm not sure if I really want to do that on gravel.  At least I have some time to save up for it, or maybe find a used one at a junkyard. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and see what the message says."

Mikey sent a follow-up note:

"Okay, well, I finally listened to the message," he said. "He wants me to call him back to have a chat.  I had a small panic attack,  so I wasn't going to call.  Ray decided to pretend to be me and he called.  He's a lot better with things like that. I get caught off guard a lot when I'm on the phone with someone and then later think of  things I should have or could have said.  LOL!  Turns out, just as I thought, I'm screwed. I just have to save up some money for the day the transmission dies. Oh well, live and learn, I guess. That's a lot of seed packets to sell...

"Just a quick note on the COVID thing here... The county next to ours where the Walmart is, cases jumped another 10 since I checked yesterday afternoon and it's only 6:30 am. I check the totals two or three times a day and for the past few weeks, they have been increasing a lot throughout the day.  I don't know what's changed,  but it's getting a bit scarier."

Here is an email from Kathleen in North Hollywood:

"Your story of trying to find out the cause of your pain reminds me of Rick’s (her husband) story," she said.

"Rick has a rare disease that took a few years to diagnose. The problem is that when it is bad, you can’t see a doctor right away. When it is gone, doctors don’t care to hear about it. It is sort of like telling an MD you had a bad case of flu or a sore knee or whatever. When it is gone, they don’t want to hear about it.

"He has Palindromic Rheumatism. Internist and other doctors could not find out what was wrong. But, a rheumatologist (old and smart…many have only seen this disease once or twice) told him what he has. There was a period when it was wrecking his life. There isn’t any treatment for it. He can’t take steroids since he is diabetic.

"Rick’s pain was so severe some days that all he could do was sit on the couch looking pitiful. Other times, his pain didn’t keep him from functioning. He once had a very bad few months. He still gets attacks, but not often. Knock on wood.

"I hope you will end up feeling better eventually even if you don’t get completely over it."

My former co-worker from the Fresno Bee days, Jenny, sent me some happy news:

"I am a grandmother," she said. "It's very exciting. His name is Walker Spencer McGill. He is adorable. He was in NICU for two weeks, but is fine now and growing He was 6 weeks early. My daughter is staying with us for awhile. Because of the pandemic, she was able to work from here. She normally lives in L.A. and is a fashion director."

My friend Mauro in Italy sent me a super brief note that said "My Tuscany trip." He included four photos, but I do not know the story behind them.

My friend Eric in Costa Mesa sent a note:

"In my opinion, Trump really is losing it," he said. "Who could come off with such weird things- thankful to God he got the Virus????  What?  I used to think Trump would easily be re-elected, but I don't think that way anymore. I bet it is going to come down to a few districts or a state, pretty much 50/50.

"I'm still planning on going to Arizona next month. My eBay sales are down 45% in October-- is that because everything is opening up, so people are going out to spend?? That's my only guess."

My friend Nedra in Los Angeles called on Thursday. She is planning to maybe come and spend Halloween with me (unless she gets a new job she is trying for). She sent this pre-Halloween spook-a-rama picture:

My friend Angel in Colombia sent me a brief note with photos.

His note read simply "My office." He included this photo:

The second photo is a close up of the lower right-hand corner, which shows some postcards I've sent him. One from Florence, Oregon, one from Florence, Italy, and the other from San Diego. How nice.

SHIRLEY:

On Friday, the day after Shirley came home after being at an alternate location while I was in Washington, I put her out in the backyard. It took her a while to wake up and get moving, but she eventually enjoyed a very pleasant day in the yard.

I'd had several errands I had needed to run that day (go to the bank, post office, groceries, etc.), but Erich had been there. He said that when she got moving, she'd first visited a mud puddle (from the sprinklers that morning), sloshed around in it and had a drink. Later, she ate very well---which I was super pleased with. (I have no idea how she ate while I was gone. She will also be hibernating soon and she needs to eat to make it through the winter.) She spent hours outside -- more than she had done in a long time.

Eventually, she came to the door and wanted in the house. She seemed really tuckered out. Instead of her box/cardboard condo, she wanted her "shacks". She crawled under one, but was so tired, she fell asleep with her head still outside of the box.

She seemed to want to sleep all day Sunday as well, so I didn't put her out again until Monday. She ate some grass and some weeds, but refused to touch her food and didn't stay out all that long.

She stayed in again for a couple of days. I am guessing she is getting closer to time for her to hibernate. I am still concerned about her having enough intake before she goes to sleep. She really has not eaten much this summer it seems. With Thursday being another warm day (It was 90 degrees today), I put her out. She did eat, but only a modest amount.

She stayed out several hours Thursday. I'm glad about that. I want her to enjoy the yard as much as possible before hibernation, because when she wakes up in the spring, she'll probably be in Washington and will never see this backyard again.

ME:

There hasn't been too much excitement for me. On Sunday, Erich and I met a friend for breakfast in Clovis. She just started chemo for cancer and I was concerned about her being immunocompromised--especially with the virus going on. But she wanted to meet. I was also surprised to learn that we could eat indoors. I had no idea that Fresno County had been allowing indoor dining since September 30th.

On Tuesday, I went for my lumbar puncture (spinal tap). It was at Clovis Community Hospital, which is all torn up and going through a big expansion construction job. Erich dropped me off just before 7 AM. He said he hadn't slept well the night before, so I reminded him to please make sure his phone was on when he got home so the hospital could call when I was done.

Instead of the outpatient area, I was directed to another area of the hospital.

This is the room I was eventually rolled into for the lumbar puncture. It looks less than sterile, but whatever...  I was told I would have the area the puncture was going to be done in numbed before the actual spinal tap was done. I was told to roll onto my stomach. There was a very sharp (OWW!) stinging sensation (was that the numbing thing or the puncture? Jeepers!). Then I had the sensation akin to what it feels like to be kicked in the groin---only not as intense and in my back. And then it was over.

I had to lay in the recovery room flat on my back (and then the same at home for an additional 24 hours). Just before the hour was up, the nurse came by and told me that she could not reach Erich. She had called several times. Hmm. Erich had texted me earlier, saying he had turned his phone on. Perhaps they had an incorrect number for him? I tried calling--and texting. Nothing.

I asked if I could just Uber home. At first they were against it. But then they realized I had not been given anesthesia. I was also a nurse. They could give me discharge instructions--which they did.

I ordered an Uber and a CNA wheeled me out to the temporary outpatient pickup/drop off location. Just before the Uber arrived, Erich called. He said his phone was right next to him and turned on, but that he had slept so soundly and had not heard the calls. (His ringtone is very soothing chimes---I can understand his missing it.) He wanted to come and get me, but I told him the Uber was there. No worries. But he felt so bad. He had stayed in town specifically to take me to and from the procedure. Oh well. (He has actually extended his stay again due to the new heatwave in California. It is actually hotter in the Bay Area where he lives now than it is here...and I have air conditioning, which he does not.)

On Wednesday, we decided to go out to dinner. We decided to check out the new taqueria that had set up shop in the former location of another Mexican restaurant we used to frequent that has giant margaritas. When we got to the new place, it seemed to be doing good business (There was a line to order and many diners on the patio.), but the menu was very underwhelming...especially since it did not (Gasp!) have any cocktails on it.

We decided to go to the other restaurant (which had moved to another, bigger location just a little ways down the street) instead. However, I did like this neon sign in the new place and want to check it out sometime for lunch.

The other restaurant (in the new location) did not have nearly as many customers. It was only my second visit to the place and it had been months in between visits. The new location, while bigger, lacks ambience and is very barn-like. I would bet that the restaurant managers wished they hadn't moved as I don't think they've had nearly as many customers as they once had.

I ordered my favorite dish there, camarones hongos, which is shrimp with these incredibly buttery mushrooms. Yum! While my main dish was as tasty as ever, the portion was markedly smaller. The chips were kind of stale and the salsa tasted like tomato sauce--nothing like it used to taste like. The beans and rice were utterly unremarkable. Erich had a combo plate of a tostada, chalupa and a taco and he said the food was bland as well. And, ugh! I had the worst gas afterwards as well.

I did have one of the giant margaritas, but even that was disappointing.

Yesterday, while working on the virus diary blog, someone came to the door. It was a Fed Ex man dropping off a package for me. Golly, I apparently had won something from Dread Central, a horror website!

I think I remember entering for something---but that had only been a few days ago. How could I have won so quickly? But win I had! It was a BluRay of some new movie called YUMMY (The tag line reads "Human flesh never tasted so good." Ha!). Hooray! Just in time for Halloween...
