MAIL:
My CNA friend Kim in Wisconsin dropped me a note recently:
"Things are going good here," she said. "COVID is still bad, but our hospital remains okay so far.  I received the COVID vaccine a couple weeks ago and did well.  I had no side effects, except a sore arm.  I get the second one Feb. 5th. They say some people have more side effects from the second one, so we will see.
"My aunt and I finally decided to delay the Hawaii trip until March 2022.  We went back and forth so many times, but it doesn't look good.  We would have to fly to San Francisco and stay there for a couple days first. With how things are there, it isn't a good idea.  We even debated on going to the Bahamas instead or the US Virgin Islands, but they all have problems.  I am ok with going next March instead.  It is all paid for and we did not lose money as long as we rescheduled.  It just means I will have more shopping money when we go... LOL.
"My aunt does want me to go and visit my other aunt in Texas.  That would be Feb 18th through the 24th,  They will let me have vacation, but I am on the fence about flying. I have to let her know next week.
"Otherwise things are good here, I suppose.  I am hooked on 'Cobra Kai' on Netflix.  Off to watch another episode."

My former Fresno Bee co-worker, Jenny, sent me a quick update:
"I am babysitting my grandson full time, since my daughter's maternity leave ended," she said. "I'm enjoying it. It's good to have something to do each day."

My friend Linda in Castro Valley (who I worked with briefly at The San Leandro Times) sent me this thoughtful postcard:

My friend Linda in Fresno (Well, I guess she's also my aunt by marriage...well, step-aunt? I don't know, but I have known her since I was in the 8th grade and used to get haircuts from her back then.) sent me this note after she got vaccinated:
"It wasn't bad," she said. "I had a sore arm for a few days. Saturday and Sunday, l had a neck and headache, with worse joint pain than normal. All I could have done without, but it was tolerable. It's worth it, if it puts a stop to this mess, for sure."

SHIRLEY:
Zzzzz... She continues to hibernate away.

ME:
I finished my January series of IVIG treatments. This was the third round, the one that was magically supposed to start a change with my C.I.D.P. So far, I feel no different. I was optimistic when I started this, but now I just have a bad feeling that it's not going to work...
Being pretty much sedentary due to my disease coupled with the pandemic have left me even heavier than I was before all of this happened. I tried keto for a while, but I was concerned with ingesting so much fat. (Hello? I already have a partial blockage in my heart.) I don't cook, but I have to do something. So, on Tuesday I attempted to make soup. It didn't come out fabulously fantastic or anything---but it was edible (and a lot healthier than other things I could have eaten). I think there may be a lot of soup making in my future...
On Wednesday, I returned to physical therapy for the first time since my latest IVIG treatment. My therapist, Travis (who took over my case after the other therapist I had, Josh, was transferred to another facility) is a nice guy and good at what he does...but he doesn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. He gave me something on C.I.D.P. he'd found and printed out from the internet. I applaud his taking that extra step to research my disease. That impressed (and surprised) me. Thank you, Travis.
I had the delightful chance to see my former co-worker, Melaney for a little bit on Wednesday. Melaney loves ugly Christmas sweaters. I had come across a bottle of Ugly Sweater wine at Grocery Outlet (which I call the Used Food Store) for a whopping $2.99 and, even though Christmas is over, I had to get Mel a bottle. We chatted a bit about what was going on at the hospital, any news about our former co-worker Mike (who lost his father to COVID a few weeks ago), etc. Melaney told me that her grandmother had tested positive for the virus recently but was okay so far.
I got a shot of Mel along with her mother (whose birthday it was that day), her three-year-old daughter Piper, and her husband Joe. (Her 10-month-old daughter Harlow was inside napping.) It had been more than a year since I had seen Mel. She had been on maternity leave until just after I was out for my medical leave.
I got some tiki face masks that I ordered. I like them, but they seem kind of thin and kind of sheer. I don't feel safe in them. Perhaps I'll wait on wearing them until after I get my vaccination (whenever that might be).
Last week on Tuesday, as I was waiting for my IVIG to arrive, my door lock broke. I had to have the home health nurse come around through the gate. Ha! Yesterday, our very talented handyman friend William/Guillermo came by and put a new lock on the door for me. Thank goodness...and THANK YOU so much, Guillermo.
The amaryllis in the wax bulb is done. I didn't know what to do with it. Could I dig it out of the wax and replant the bulb? Would it grow in the wax on its own again next year? I asked Melaney, as she gave it to me. She said she thought it "a one and done" type of thing. So, into the trash it went. I guess that is the official end of the holiday season for me.
I got around to making another post of some of my vintage movie poster purchases from the last few months. I'm not buying nearly as frequently as I had been as I am moving this year and really have no extra money. However, I can't seem to bring myself to go cold turkey, so... Every once in a while I buy something. Here are the ten latest: HERE.

When the virus first hit and I started this "diary," it was about the virus, what my friends around the globe were experiencing where they are, Shirley's adventures, and a look at what I was doing as well. However, since the response to the virus was supposed to be run by our government and the Trump administration was (in my opinion) doing very little to contain it--especially by making masks political, lying about the virus, etc.--the blog took on a political aspect that I had never intended. The politics sort of took over the blog, eclipsing the virus content. It was maddening and frustrating.

Now that Trump is out of office (although I still see plenty of signs in yards and trucks with Trump flags flying behind them) and Biden is in, the political portion of the blog is done. Biden seems to have come into office with a plan to take on the virus already in place---something Trump never really seemed to have. (Kind of like his health care plan he never produced...or his taxes...or getting Mexico to pay for his wall...) While Biden and his team will be mentioned in context to the virus, I really don't think Biden'll be planning any coups or telling big lies to steal elections, or holding superspreader events, etc.  We've had our transition into back into sanity with Joe Biden's inauguration...so I am able to (hopefully) transition back to leaving politics out of my virus diary.

Later today I visit my cardiologist for a follow up about my cardiac stress test. On Tuesday I see my neurologist to follow up on my progress since my third series of infusions of IVIG. We will see what they say.

Stay SAFE! Stay HEALTHY! Stay ALIVE!

CHEERS!
