My Coronavirus Diary Part 48

With 61,000 people dead and more than 1 million confirmed cases here in the United States, Jared Kushner is calling the US ' response to the coronavirus crisis a success.

Minnesota had its biggest case jump yesterday. Boston hit a new caseload high yesterday as well. Michigan just had 100 new deaths and 1,100 new cases. This brings that states caseload up to more than 40,000 and has led to 3,670 deaths.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the Florida Department of Health has purposely under-reported deaths from coronavirus. The state has more than 33,000 cases of the virus and has had more than 1,200 deaths. Yet the governor of Florida plans to start re-opening the state on Monday.

Georgia now has more than 25,000 cases. The state has had more than 1,000 deaths. The Atlantic has a great article on Georgia's re-opening entitled "Georgia's Experiment in Human Sacrifice."

The president's push to get things back to normal and get the economy going are, in my opinion, reckless. He is ordering meat processing plants to remain open--despite workers being concerned about infection. He is already discussing how the social distancing guidelines will be fading out soon.

Despite the president's earlier announcement that the virus would dissipate with warmer weather, researchers are saying that isn't going to happen. A study shows the conditions that are best at spreading the coronavirus.

My cousin, Michael, in Spokane sent me a Newsweek article that discussed Dr. Anthony Fauci's controversial work at the Wuhan virus laboratories. Was it to find cures for pandemic-like viruses before they happen or did it involve weaponizing them?

Michael also reports that there are 350 confirmed cases with 20 dead up where he lives. Of those 350, 10 are in the hospital.

"I forget the number of tested, but it's only about 7 percent that are positive," he said.

I'm glad it is not too bad where he is.

Meanwhile, California governor Newsom is expected to order all beaches closed in an effort to keep the virus in check.

Los Angeles has become the first major US city to offer free testing for all residents. The Pentagon says the Defense Production Act is being invoked to boost coronavirus testing swab production. The Trump Administration is also said to be launching an operation to accelerate the development of a vaccine.

The drug remdesivir is making a comeback. The drug initially showed signs of helping to speed up coronavirus recovery. A clinical trial's results were not widely regarded initially. However the CDC is okaying the drug and wants its maker to get as much of it out there as it can ASAP. Perhaps it is more effective than was originally thought? Not a cure or a vaccine. Instead, the drug is said to help those with the infection get well faster.

On Tuesday, I mentioned that the winners of the Outbreak Breakout short film contest had been posted with their efforts available for viewing. I learned yesterday that the a new contest, the Outbreak Breakout short film contest - The 2nd Wave is happening now. Get your creative spooky virus thinking caps on and make a COVID 19 horror movie. The winner scores $500.

Speaking of horror, the couple that now owns the original house that the haunting that THE CONJURING was based on says the place truly is haunted. For one week, May 9-16, they are planning to share their quarantine experience with viewers. They will be streaming 24/7 all seven days so viewers can see any paranormal occurrence should one happen.

My friend Christa in Santa Monica sent me a link to a video on Andrea Bocelli's YouTube page. The video shows fans of the singer and those of Celine Dion, from all around the world, lip-syncing to their hit THE PRAYER from their homes while the world shelters in place.

My mom sent me a link to a news article that says it could take up to 4 months for a surgical procedure to be re-scheduled once the virus threat dies down. The sooner I get my muscle biopsy, the better.

My day was uneventful. Nothing happened. Really.

Even Shirley behaved herself. I didn't find her climbing anything or getting stuck anywhere. She behaved herself all day and was always easily found when I went out to check on her.

I guess everyone needs a quiet day--even in the midst of lockdown--once in a while.

Stay SAFE. Stay SHELTERED. Stay ALIVE.

CHEERS!
