MAIL:
Linda from Castro Valley, California, chimed in with a note:
"Our latest news is we’re in quarantine for 10 days," she said. "One of our sons may have been exposed and then he came over here. We we’re outside with masks, but you never know. Everyone feels fine so far, though. It's just a self-quarantine. No armed guards out in front. We don’t really have anywhere to go anyhow. Everyone feels fine."
Several days later, Linda sent this quick follow-up:
"Well, our son just got a negative COVID test result, so we probably didn’t get infected (from him, anyway) either," she said. "But it’s a warning to keep our guard up, wear a mask, and stay 6 feet from others!"

My CNA friend Kim in Wisconsin sent a note:
"I worked the last couple of days," she said.  "It was not bad though. New Year's Eve was quiet. I have been training a new girl who seems to be picking up quick. She wants to be a flight nurse, so I thought if we were low census tomorrow, we could hang out in the ER to show her what it is like.
"I am also getting the COVID vaccine Monday.  I am excited and nervous.  Has anyone that you know of had a bad reaction to it?  So far, here it has been okay, just people complaining of a very sore arm. "Hawaii is getting closer.  Everyday things change, so we will make a final decision by the end of the month if we want to put the trip off until the fall or spring?  It is all paid for, so it doesn't bother me either way."

My last Christmas card for 2020 (or my very first, super-early card for 2021) came on January 2nd from my former co-worker Michele and her husband Joe (as seen in the lower left corner).
No. Hold the phone...on Tuesday, Jan. 5, I got another card from Kevin in Massachusetts.

Eric in Costa Mesa sent more details of his trip to Arizona before Thanksgiving and a photo:
"We went the Coachella way," he said. "The Cabazon Dinosaurs were painted red and green for the holidays, but somehow they looked different than when you sent the pictures from your trip. Hadley's stand has been demolished and in a new building next to a tacky casino. There must have been 10 billboards for pot stores in Palm Springs in this one area.
"From then on the scenery didn't change much until you get close to Phoenix. We went on the 10, which goes all the way to the east coast. Well, the 10 is filled with big rig trucks. The speed limit is 75, so everyone goes 80-85, including the trucks. You can't go 70- they ride up on you, honk or turn on their lights ( it's 2 lanes each side). It was stressful since the 1first time driving there and I was so tired from sitting. We didn't stop much since it seemed like Tucson was so far away. It was 10+ hours!
"We stopped in at Blythe for lunch. I found this beautiful vintage coffee shop still open ( only at night, the inside has been mostly modernized).
"Often you read that Phoenix and Tucson are the fastest growing cities in the US.  I's true. Miles of new tract homes, big ones, painted in browns and tans, without solar panels! They have almost no water., How do they get all the electricity? ( Some of it comes from SoCal as it is.) Strip malls everywhere, and fast food. It is a fast food, burgers, steak and BBQ food styles- maybe other parts are different.
"They have no marine layer, so it's brighter than here, dry air and higher elevation. Still it was a great trip, glad to take my parents somewhere different before Dad is too bad off. I wanted to stay at Hotel McCoy, a fun 1950's place with free bikes, ping pong, and tamale room service! They sold out for the week. So. I found a Day's Inn nearby. It was not special but it was safe ( There was one drug deal in front of our room as we got home the next night. It was sad; three college kids and a 14-15 yr old selling - he rode his bicycle, I guess that proves it safe, even the drug crowd wants to do their business there).
"The next day was the Southwest Desert Museum.
"Sorry for going on so long. I haven't been anywhere in so long. ( I was going to Bakersfield and Pismo Beach in March, right when everything closed.)
"Hopefully you can go to the Desert Museum sometime. It's way off in the hills, the Saguaro cactus monument right near it. That type of cactus is literally everywhere in the area. There was a small theme park near there that closed due to COVID. It was a western town where dozens of western movies and TV shows were filmed.
The Southwest Desert Museum is amazing. There are a few indoor areas, including lizard and insect areas (with a black widow exhibit that was just too much-- big black ones with lots of egg sacs... Shudder!)  It's all tied together in that the tiny amount of rain keeps all these varied things alive. Floppy-eared, cottontail rabbits were wandering around. The snack bar was a bit of a joke ( hamburgers or ice cream?). For some reason, there were no lids or straws for your beverage. I guess to save plastic?
Again, I got sunburned and exhausted ( even with sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses) due to the Arizona sun and lack of moisture."

My friend Vye shared an update on her family members who got COVID 19.
"My cousin is officially now COVID-free," she said. "She's still really sick, but is going to be fine, thank goodness. Her husband is on steroids to treat his breathing and is now improving slowly. But their uncle (my uncle's brother) passed away from COVID on Sunday. It's an unbelievably unfair way to go, when your loved ones can't even sit by your side and hold your hand."

My friend Angel in Colombia sent me a short video. I think he was working one of his many jobs...or perhaps just fixing up his apartment?
I asked him what he was doing and the next day he sent this note:
"I was working as an assistant in construction, but in the final part of the apartments," he said. "That means in painting and details, to deliver (restore?) the apartments again.  I no longer work, because in Colombia we are in a curfew for 5 days and they haven't called me to work anymore."

My nursing school classmate, Mark, who lives and works in Sonora, California, sent me a note:
"I had my second shot on Friday and had an excellent immune response the following day," he said of the COVID vaccine. "I felt like crap. Only I and another RN had the lousy side effects that I know of so far."

ME:
I started off the new year constipated. Swell... There's nothing like starting off a new year when you are still full of last year's sh*t. (Excuse my French...) I spent New Year's Day (much like I had New Year's Eve and the day before) on my computer. I felt bad, as Erich was still here visiting. But up through New Year's Eve, I was working on my last blog---which came out New Year's Day. On New Year's Day, I was busy working on my annual Fake Jan Day video. Fake Jan Day is January 2--so I had to get it done as well. Eventually, I did finish the video and Erich and I were able to finish watching Stephen King's THE OUTSIDER, which Erich had really been chomping at the bit to finish since we had already seen the first few episodes of the 10-episode series.
We ordered Mexican food near the house for dinner that night. The state have banned indoor and outdoor dining due to the insane number of COVID cases. Although several places were still operating in defiance, I was pleased to see this little behaving responsibly. The entrance was barricaded to keep people out.
A bell for service (covered in plastic), menus, and a tip jar were all waiting at the door. It was the first time I had their food. it was okay and I am curious to try their breakfasts (which are served all day).
On Jan. 2 (Fake Jan Day), I posted my Fake Jan Day video. I also posted a brief blog post explaining what Fake Jan Day is for the uninitiated.
(And, yes, I was finally able to go to the bathroom...)

On the 4th, I had a cardiac stress test because of my complains of skipped heartbeats or PVC (premature ventricular contractions). I had been wearing a monitor for a week that captured some, but after my first week of IVIG (which was after the monitor was off), they seemed to intensify. Looking at this photo, although I can't read cardiac rhythms, it is evident there is something funky going on. And this picture was taken before the test even began. (I had not yet been injected with the medication to make my heart "stress".)  I return on the 22nd to speak with the doctor.
Last Saturday, I finally heard about my request for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration. I was denied. The appeal process has started, but that will take months as well. I am really nervous as to how I'll afford to live once my state disability (which runs out March 26) ends. I do have long-term disability insurance from work--thank goodness--but that is a lot less (and only comes once a month) than what I was getting from the state.
Although Nedra, who had come to visit me at Christmas, had gone home on the 27th, Erich, who had also come to visit for the holiday, was still at my place. So, last Friday, we decided to do a little local field trip again.

Since the outbreak is so bad here and everything is locked up tight (or is supposed to be), our chosen destinations were more small towns in the area we'd never been to before. We wouldn't even be stopping in most of them. We just wanted to drive through and see them.
From my house in Clovis, we took the back way (down Shaw to Academy) to the 180. We passed Centerville and Minkler and the old school house restaurant that we had visited previously.
The 180 became a more rural, twisty road as we headed on towards the mountains. Erich spotted our turnoff and we drove through some nice foothills and valleys.
And suddenly, before we knew it, we were at our first stop--Orange Cove.
Orange Cove looked to be just one long, main street with a whole lot of nothing, really. According to the city's website, Orange Cove exists due to all of the citrus tree in the area and the packing sheds for them. Because of all of the oranges and lemons in the area, it is a "destination" stop on the Blossom Trail. Hmm. The town has also apparently only had a police force of any kind since 2009. Jinkies!
There were several restaurants (all of which featured Mexican food) and the town boasted a Family Dollar, a Dollar General and a Dollar Tree. This shop we passed that made me laugh out loud the most was this one with it's stylish mannequins (with mannequin goosebumps modeling skimpy outfits in January) out on the street. I know times are tough in the time of COVID, but...
An old brick building we passed had a faded painted sign on its side for Orange Cove Hardware. There was a Subway (and I think I saw a Burger King). Many of the businesses were taking a cue from the Orange County area of California and labeling themselves the O.C.
With Erich navigating, from the O.C. (Orange Cove), we suddenly found ourselves traveling through Orosi. Glamorous... The community was founded in 1888 by Daniel R. Shafer, according to the page on Wikipedia. It was named 'oro', or gold, for the golden poppies covering the nearby fields (which are probably long gone...). The town apparently has a sizeable, yet small Filipino population in it and there apparently is a "Little Manilia" section of town that we did not see.
Just a little ways beyond Orosi, we passed through a tiny town I had never even heard of before called Sultana. Sultana, according to the 2010 census, has about 775 people in it. That's it.
Just beyond Sultana, we crossed the city limits into Dinuba.
As we headed into downtown Dinuba, I passed this Wimpy's hamburger stand.  Oooo... I know I'll be back some day (after the pandemic) for a visit. Way back when I was working for The Fresno Bee, I had written a piece on the original Wimpy's in Tulare. Since that time, two more Wimpy's have popped up -- one in Visalia and this one in Dinuba. I learned about the new locations when I did a  blog post when I revisited the Tulare location back in 2019. I'll definitely have to return to this one and check it out.
As we got closer to downtown Dinuba, I could see that it had some charm.
It was a lot bigger than I would have thought. I know very little about the town. I would have thought the place existed simply as an agricultural town, but I was sort of surprised by its size. Ruiz Foods, makers of Mexican frozen foods (burritos, TV dinners, etc.) is located in the town and is a large employer (1,500 people), but that would not account for the town's size for the age of its downtown.
Our final destination was a repeat stop. When we had visited Reedley before, it had been on a Sunday and the town was pretty much shut down.
We came back to give the town another look, hopefully with people out and about.
Reedley is another surprisingly good-sized small town. Largely agricultural-based, the town adopted the title of "The World's Fruit Basket" for itself.
We headed back to its downtown section, which is overlooked by a pair of water towers, and decided to poke around a bit.
It was pretty crowded, but I finally found parking in front of two flower shops (completely separate shops but right next door to each other) on the main drag. While most of the buildings were dull, flat spaces with an overhang, the buildings on the corners held the most interest.
This particular building, with it's run down and vacant second floor, really interested me.
Most of the people we saw wore masks, although we saw plenty who were maskless. And then there were some, like this woman, who were wearing masks...but had them pulled down below their nose and (occasionally) their mouth, too.
We spied this place. It was open and serving people outside. Hmm. We hadn't eaten all day and it was well after noon. We found an isolated table and decided to try it.
Erich had the nopalitos (cactus) omelet. I had the tri-tip one. We were served huge portions that we both finished.
After that, we headed home. I snapped a shot of the "R" (for Reedley) on a small hill on the way.
Erich had gifted me with a DNA kit from Ancestry.com. He'd gotten one for himself as well. That night, after our trip, we spent time spitting into vials and sent them off.
On Saturday morning, Erich made the most delicious pancakes for breakfast with blueberries and raspberries in them.
He put the syrup (real syrup---not some chemically created kind) in a pot to warm and added crushed raspberries and blueberries to that as well. OMG! It was soooooo yummy.
I had a grocery pick up that day. It was nothing exciting, except...  Since the start of the pandemic, I have been trying and trying and trying to score some Lysol spray. Finally, 10+ months later, I got a bottle. Hooray!
Erich was planning on going home on Sunday (although he ended up staying until Monday). So, on Saturday night, we made special lychee gimlets for one last night of cocktails.
The flower bulb (amaryllis?) my former co-worker Melaney had given me is in full bloom and looking fab.
But I don't know what to do with it afterwards. Do I remove the wax somehow and plant it or do I just throw it away...or will if come back on its own next year?
You won't  believe this, but I was waiting for my IVIG shipment all day. The company said it was coming that day and I was due to start my treatments the next day. I had things i needed to do that day, but I waited. I had been checking the porch throughout the day to see if it has arrived and I had somehow missed it. I tried to check again late in the day and... my deadbolt broke. Ha! So, I can't use my front door.  It's was too late to get it fixed. I texted my  nurse to let me know when she arrived the next morning.  I have to go around and let her in through the gate via the back door.  Too funny but somehow par for the course. The box with the IVIG did show up eventually and I had to haul that around through the back. Ugh. It left me huffing and puffing.
Health-wise, I don't know... I am supposed to start feeling the IVIG working after my third series of infusions (which have started). However, if anything, I feel WORSE. It's actually harder to get around, I think. To top it off, I have been having dizzy spells and have had a quasi-headache since just before the new year or so---and that is getting worse, too. I will talk to the neurologist about that when I see him next (26th) as well as my cardiologist (I go on the 22nd). My tail bone is inexplicably sore as well. Instead of healing and getting better, honestly, I feel like I am limping along to the final finish line. We will see what happens after the IVIG. I'm not giving up...I know no one lives forever, but I am only 55 and I just feel like I am falling further and further behind in my attempts to recover. I feel like the main character in a bad, 70's TV Movie of the Week who has some rare disease. Will there be a happy ending or will it end in tragedy? Stick around after these commercials and find out.

I had to get poked three times to get my IVIG going the first day. That's always sooooo much fun. (NOT!)
The infusions just mess me up. I am tired all of the time as it is with my disease...but the IVIG just leaves me so weak for some reason (and it makes me have to pee a LOT as well. Ha!). I hope it is working, but as I am in the midst of my third series of infusions (and the third set is supposed to be the charm to tell if it is working or not), I can honestly say I feel no change for the better... But I have to continue it all. What choice do I have?
When the blog returns in two weeks, I should only have virus stuff to deal with and (hopefully) just a little Trump news. Let's get this ass-clown GONE!

Stay SAFE! Stay HEALTHY! Get VACCINATED (if it is your group's turn)! Stay ALIVE!
